If you want to get down to the nuts, volts and bits of computing, a COSMAC Elf is a good way to do it. At the most basic level it still deals with assembly language using toggle switches and LEDs for indicators. But, a built in monitor program allows it to be connected to a computer terminal program for programming and experimentation.
